The Department of History and Geography and Tourism is one of the earliest established departments of the University.

In the department there are 7 possible majors in both Junior College (3 year) programme and undergraduate programme, they include history, history of education, geographical sciences, geography education, tourism management, hotel management, and tourism English. Now there are 510 undergraduate students studying in the department.

There are 30 teachers and researchers in the department, among them, 4 are professors and 10 are associate professors. 90% of them have a master's degree or above. The teachers are competent in their special areas, have a wide range of ages, and are experienced and knowledge in their professional fields.

Research has always been valued for years, especially the professional course of history and modern world history, which are classified as university-level quality courses. Since the 11th “Five Year Plan”, teachers have published more than 40 articles, of which 20 articles were published in national academic journals. In addition, 5 monographs and textbooks were published. In the past two years, 13 provincial research subjects and five university-level subjects received approval, covering topics of travel, history, education and student management. The department ranks the first in the whole university to achieve that number of research topics.

The department library has a collection of 1.5 million books, being among the front rank of universities in quality and quantity. There are 3 simulating operating rooms for practice teaching: a hotel room, a hotel dining room, and a tour guide room. Also there are some after-university practice teaching bases.  

The practice teaching has always been taken seriously, such as the students practicing in the tourism enterprises and primary and middle schools in whole province. By doing this, the graduates are highly employed. Every year the students are well organized to participate in various tourism skills competitions, both inside and outside the province and outstanding results have been obtained. The students are also encouraged to take the test to get the professional certificates, such as tourist guide, middle school teachers and so on.

For over 30 years, about 5000 students have been educated to be talents in various fields including history, geography and tourism in Sichuan Province, and many of them have become government officials, middle school head masters, excellent teachers and successful businessmen.
