The Department of Foreign Langauges was established in the mid-1960s with a large number of enrollments. The focus of the department is teaching and research, based upon extraordinary faculty and facilities.

The department offers English, German and Japanese for students to study. It has a professional teaching team of experienced and knowledgeable teachers who have excellent teaching and research capabilities and academic reputations in Sichuan province. At present, there are 51 teachers and staff members, of whom 48 are full-time teachers, 4 are professors and 20 are associate professors. Among them, 21 teachers have got Ph.D degrees or Master’s degrees. More than 20 teachers in the department have been to foreign countries as visiting professors. Meanwhile, the department has engaged in 12 long-term and short-term foreign experts and professors. At the moment, more than 20 teachers are under the age of 40. The teachers are respected and loved by their students because of their professionalism, dedication and rigorous attitude.

The department has opened English Education and Business English courses for students. It offers both Undergraduate Programme (4 year) and Junior College Programme (3 year) with full-time study. For Adult Higher Eductaion, both Senior College programme (2 year) and Junior College programme（2 year）are offered as well. Moreover, there is a Self-study Examination of Undergraduate Programme. In the respect of international exchanges of education and cooperation, for a long time, the department holds Summer English Programmes which can strengthen the students’ oral English, the exchanging programs for students studying in the well-known university of Europe, the United States and Southeast Asia.

The department has cultivated more than ten thousand English professionals for Sichuan and Chongqing area since it was established. It has undertaken many projects, such as National Training programme, the Provincial Training Programme and the Backbone English Teachers in Minority Area Training Programme. It sends teachers to work in the countryside. By this way more than ten thousand teachers have been trained. The graduates work hard in their career to reach their goals. Many of them have become academic leaders and the backbone in local schools. Moreover, some of them have become doctoral tutors in the universities, some become civil servants for the nation, and many have been rated as model workers and excellent teachers.

Now, under the leadership of the college’s Party Committee, the department of foreign language has formed a united team to give service to urban and rural areas of Sichuan to provide a harmonious and balanced education. The main goal is to set up an English training base which can intergrate teachers’ cultivation and provide training for the nine year compulsory education.  This will also define its training level for preschool education and teachers training pattern of secondary occupational education. Under the guideline of sientific development, it focuses on the development of tertiary education with full-time study and the innovation of teaching training. The department has become a base which is responsible for the continuing education of teachers who form the backbone of middle schools, as well as a base which offers curriculum, research and training to English teachers of primary and middle school at both the provincial and the national level. Because of the excellent atmosphere of study and the high quality of management, the department has been praised at a provincial level for eight consecutive years. Currently, according to the goal and guideline of college’s Party Committee, the faculty and staff members are working hard to turn the department into a top-rank one.
